PROJECT Identity and packaging

Avling had everything a great brewery needs: a compelling story, exceptional product, and a genuine commitment to Ontario's land and ingredients. What it lacked was a brand capable of communicating any of it. When they decided to upgrade their packaging from short to tall cans, they took the opportunity for a rebrand.

Our inspiration came from two of Avling's main values: their deep-rooted connection to their neighbourhood in Leslieville, Toronto, and their commitment to sourcing Ontario-grown ingredients — including plants grown right on their rooftop. To combine the concepts of Ontario-wide agriculture and a neighbourhood-specific focus, we wanted a design that spoke to urban nature today but connected it to generations of appreciation for Ontario's ecology. Visual inspiration came from the Birds of Canada banknotes from the 1980's and 90’s, and vintage illustrations of flora and fauna with intricately detailed paintings combined with the artist's scribbled notes.
